Junk Room Redesign
Sharing with you a redesign fa disused junk room and a lounge makeover in the same property. How smaller projects can be just as challenging and satisfying!
Original Floor Plan
Lounge Constraints
- Original builder specification for decor
- No life to the room
- Colder room in the winter
- Not homely
- Occupant feels it’s lacking something
- Wants to reuse what they already have as much as possible
Junk Room Constraints
- Access door doesn’t flow from hallway
- Open plan feel to kitchen doesn’t help space have an identity
- Room used for occasional eating, storing of infrequent kitchen items and occasional playroom
- Multiple uses – no clear definition
- Infrequent use
New Floor Plan
Lounge
- Install large secondhand stone fireplace as main feature
- Surround with salvaged timber panels and block low level shelf with alcove lighting LED strip
- Personalise by bringing family photographs and favourite artwork into the room
- Update decor using neutral range of coffee and cream colours
- Use existing suites, adding in 2 armchairs with contrasting textured upholstery
- Keep existing foot stall
- Use existing curtains, matching in cushion covers
- Large antique mirror above the fireplace to open up the space
- Mix and match textured soft furnishings and carpet using same colour tones
Junk Room
- Close off old access door to use as alcove for storage and shelving
- Fill fireplace alcoves with bespoke designed slavaged timber framing f0r storage and shelves
- Cover existing iron fireplace mantel with a block of salvage timber that echoes the line in the bespoke alcove timber
- Create a multi function room that is not ‘plonked together’
- Decor identifies with the room as a playroom/kitchen diner/snug
- Used existing circular drop leaf oak table positioned by the window for kitchen dining
- Purchase a contemporary chaise lounge and armchair in light fabric
- Update the decor to reflect the soft rose colours in the salvaged timber
- Natural wool carpet with a deep tone of soft rose colour
- Architectural and portable lighting with no glare, using all round diffusers to soften room
- Create extra deep carcass with T&G panels in the kitchen to house a fridge/freezer and create more of a divid/disguise between the main kitchen zones and the old junk room.
